I Need Help Finding a Home

BRHP provides housing search assistance to new and existing voucher holders. We hold a workshop once a month to help you in your search process. Additionally, if you need transportation to a unit or would like someone to meet with you and the landlord, our housing search counselors can help. Please feel free to call them for advice or to schedule an appointment. See our Staff Directory for contact information.

Make Sure to Search in an Opportunity Area

You can use your voucher in Opportunity Area throughout the Baltimore region, which includes Baltimore City, Howard County, Harford County, Anne Arundel County, Baltimore County, and Carroll County. We provide three-unit referrals at your voucher briefing. Please check out these referred units first. If they are not right for you, you can try one of the rental search websites listed below, but please keep in mind that many of these listings may not be in Opportunity Areas. Once you find a unit you are interested in, use our Search Tool to see if the property is in an Opportunity Area and if the rent is acceptable.

I Need Help Paying My Security Deposit

If you need security deposit assistance, you must contact a counselor to apply for the security deposit loan before you sign your lease. Remember you are responsible for a portion of the security deposit and your portion of your first month’s rent. As a reminder if you choose a property in a non-opportunity area, you will not be eligible for security deposit assistance.

I Need Help Calculating My Rent

There is no set dollar amount attached to a voucher. The subsidy amount for a voucher depends on your income, your voucher size, and the payment standard for the area where you chose to live. To find out what the payment standard is for a unit you are interested in, use our Search Tool. Enter the address of the property and your voucher size, and the tool will give you the range of acceptable rents for the area where you are looking.

I Want to Move

If you want to move from your current assisted unit with our program, you must submit our Request to Move application at least 150 to 180 days before the date you plan to move. You must also get approval to move from BRHP before giving your landlord notice and moving out of your unit. Refer to the Request to Move application for more instruction.

I’ve Found a Unit. Now What?

Once you have found a unit, your landlord may require you to complete an application. Please be prepared to provide an application fee and complete the application if you are seriously interested in renting the unit. When your application is approved, your landlord will need to complete a Request for Tenancy Approval Packet, also known as an RTA. Once the landlord has completed the RTA, they should submit the packet and the required documentation to our rental assistance department for processing. RTA processing can take up to 15 business days from the day that it is received and confirmed complete. After the RTA is approved, an initial move-in inspection is scheduled. Any unit that is leased must meet HUD’s Housing Quality Standards. The unit must pass inspection before you are given approval to move-in. You will receive a program approval notice after your unit has passed inspection which grants you approval to move into your new unit.

Living in an Opportunity Area not only has great benefits for you, but also your children. Many of these neighborhoods are served by some of the best schools in the state.

Finding a home in an Opportunity Area with a great school for your children will help ensure that you and your children make the best of your move. Maryland School Report Card – This website is provided by the Maryland State Department of Education. It provides information on test scores, attendance rates, teacher qualifications and special services.  You can look up a school by clicking on the “School” menu at the upper-right hand corner of the page and selecting the county where the school is located. Then, find the school’s name on the list provided.
