Jessica’s journey to stability began in a place of uncertainty. As a single mother of two, she was living in a homeless shelter and later renting a small room in her sister’s house, just trying to survive. Despite working hard, she did not earn enough to afford stable housing for her small family on her own.
That changed when she joined the Baltimore Housing Mobility Program. Over the next 10 years, Jessica found not just housing, but a pathway to opportunity. The program moved her family to a neighborhood where her children could thrive, feeling safe, supported, and accepted. “They didn’t get picked on as much, and they fit in better,” she said. The schools in her new community had the resources and teachers to support her children’s behavioral and special needs, which gave Jessica peace of mind and the freedom to pursue better employment opportunities.
When she lost her job during her time in the program, BRHP’s support helped her stay afloat. “Having that type of support really did help with my stress levels,” she shared. “I knew that if I were having any financial issues, such as losing my job, I would have their support while I was getting back on my feet.”
Jessica also took full advantage of BRHP’s workshops and programs, which helped her build financial literacy and confidence. In her final eight months with BRHP, Jessica enrolled in the GAIN program, which helped her prepare for homeownership. She was able to focus on her goals and eventually secured a fulltime job with the State of Maryland. With her credit score rising and her stress levels falling, she was ready to take the leap.
Today, Jessica is a proud homeowner in a safe, welcoming neighborhood. She stands on her own two feet, free from government assistance, and full of
gratitude for the support that helped her get there. “All thanks to the BRHP program and staff,” she said.
