When Kiera was 18 years old, she had just had her first little girl and decided that it was necessary for her to move out and begin living on her own. When the time came though, Kiera realized that she didn’t have the means to live independently, so when her friend told her about BRHP’s Housing Mobility Program, she immediately reached out. Now, ten years later, she owns her own home in Baltimore City.
After receiving the initial program recommendation from her friend, Kiera found the application process to be simple and straightforward, and the clear and detailed communication between BRHP and its’ clients made the process even more accessible. When asked what aspect of the Housing Mobility program she valued the most, Kiera emphasized, “the communication, the help, and the assistance” BRHP offered, expressing gratitude for the in-depth support from housing counselors to answer all her questions regarding any aspect of the program. From explaining the program requirements and the necessary first steps during the pre-counseling phase, to the continual support services during the housing search and moving process, to the post-move counseling and in-person check-ins from the housing counselors, BRHP prioritizes clear and constant communication to assist clients every step of the way through the program. Kiera credits this client-centered approach and communication for her current housing stability; “[BRHP] really helped me a lot as far as having a stable home for me and my children for the past 10 years.” The support and motivation provided by the Housing Mobility program helped Kiera transition to living on her own and establish a stable home for herself and her children. “They motivated me to get out and better myself to become a homeowner”.
Beyond the Housing Choice Voucher program, Kiera participated in BRHP’s Growing Assets and Income Program, also known as GAIN. This voluntary program enables families to establish and accomplish their educational, career, and financial goals to support complete financial independence. The workshops, counseling, and educational courses available to Kiera through this program have helped her maintain housing stability.
Kiera now owns her own home in Baltimore City, and has voluntarily withdrawn from the Housing Mobility program. She has achieved her housing goals of establishing herself and her children in a steady and safe home, and continues to refer her friends due to her wonderful experience with BRHP. “I referred a few people already [to the Housing Mobility Program],” she said, “the program is great, very helpful and attentive”.
